Winnipeg’s women of distinction honoured

Wednesday night saw nearly 1,000 people gather at the Winnipeg Convention Centre to honour the 2013 Women of Distinction nominees and celebrate their achievements.

More than 80 women were nominated in 12 categories, including arts, leadership and management, and culture.

The evening’s master of ceremonies was¬†Susan Auch, three-time Olympic medallist. She provided a balance of anecdotes, humour, and inspiration throughout the ceremony.

“Nominees are very humble,” she said, noting many nominees felt unworthy of the nomination. She encouraged nominees to use their position for further good.

“Take the award and help the next person be better.”

Randi Gage, the winner for the category of voluntarism, healthy living, and recreation, encouraged her fellow women to keep making their mark.

“Anyone can read a history book,” she said. “Very few can put the words in them.”

The sold-out event supported the YMCA-YWCA and its programming and featured a processional of nominees, a full dinner, and the awards ceremony.

A winner is announced at the 2013 Women of Distinction Awards at the Winnipeg Convention Centre Wednesday night.
