TicketMOMster’s Top 5 Favourite Shows of 2016 – #2
For those of you who haven’t followed this blog from the beginning (we’re now into the second year), you may be wondering what credentials I have to create such a list. Well, I go to a lot of shows. Do you want to know how many bands I reviewed this year alone? (Drum roll please …)
As of today’s date…ONE HUNDRED AND TWO bands and/or shows!
Did your jaw hit the floor? Because mine did. Seriously? I reviewed that many bands IN ONE YEAR? Jeez, I was busy. I think that’s double from last year!
Anyway, I’m on a musical journey and I’m learning stuff by seeing tons of things and now I know more stuff about things than last year, so here’s a list of stuff and things I liked from this year (those are my credentials in a nutshell – heh):
2. Kamasi Washington @ The Burt (TD International Winnipeg Jazz Festival – Jazz Winnipeg)
I have a feeling this show will be #1 on many jazz-lover’s 2016 best concert list.
This was the first time I had seen local guitarist, Keith Price. I remember him looking a bit nervous, but that was totally unwarranted because his set was absolutely dreamy. I remember floating away on the vibe he was creating and being jarred back into reality when Kamasi and his “loud” band took the stage.
My irritated opinion of Kamasi’s band didn’t last, and in no time I was completely blown out of the water by them. Crazy skillful and fantastic entertainers, the Burt was electric from start to finish. I kept wondering if Kamasi’s management knew he was playing in Winnipeg. Nothing against Winnipeg, but we don’t usually get “World Tour” acts here. Usually the Canadian stops on a “World Tour” include:
1. Toronto
That’s it.
How blessed are we, that Kamasi’s “World Tour” stopped in Winnipeg? Especially blessed.
If you missed Kamasi don’t kick yourself too hard. Just save your nickels and dimes because you’ll be flying to Toronto for his next “World Tour”…and I’m tempted to join you.
