Begin with the end in mind. There are many kinds of endings and Randy Rutherford is a master at mesmerizing you, charming you, totally enrapturing you with his sexy song voice, and then going for the sucker punch.
While sharing his life for 75 minutes in The Guitar Teacher: An Arctic Romance, the Alaska native comes to Winnipeg via San Francisco to do more than entertain. Rutherford may have a profound hearing loss but he has moved on from that story in this production. Listen between the lines.
A 21-year-old Rutherford tells his coming of age story by intertwining the stories of his own guitar teacher and his first love. His guitar renderings and singing of folk songs transport the audience to the fishing boats and oil boom in ’70s Alaska.
Rutherford holds a Master of Fine Arts degree and has taught at the California College of Arts & Crafts, California State University, and the University of Alaska. He is the founder of Club Solo, based at the Marsh Theatre in San Francisco, and has been Best of Fringe 21 times!
This guitar teacher has many lessons for us. The last one of the show rips us from the tranquil cabin and campfire to a present day reality. Listen and learn.
