Scientist Turned Comedian Tim X Lee plays at Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall, U of W, 515 Portage Ave. and is listed in Fringe Program as “unclassifiable.” I agree.
This reviewer has a scientific hypothesis: X (scientist) + Y (comedian) = Zzzzzzzz
Tim X Lee attempted to make science funny. Now I know where the saying “don’t quit your day job” originated.
Lee let us know how smart he is by mentioning nine times (I counted) that he has a PhD. I say the P is for Pfui. (It’s a Scrabble word).
He introduced himself to the audience by announcing he has a great voice. A radio voice. Wheeee. By the umpteenth power point slide (PPt is passe Tim), I was ready to change the channel as it felt like a lecture riddled with in-jokes.
While Lee’s gig might work at corporate lunches (if alcohol is served), his attempt to translate science language into common parlance hit a low point on the graph when he posted Google searches. I think Google should sue him.
His explanation of technical and scientific terms might work for the left brain linear thinkers since his show is in a University lecture theatre. “The Arts” big picture people he spoke down to weren’t taking notes, they were on their cell phones or doodling.
As part of my scientific research into audience tolerance, I observed the women around where I was sitting were not amused by Lee’s comments about his pregnant spouse back home with a two year old, and an infant. Why would any man think it is funny to poke fun at his wife by posting a sad text message from her on the screen?
Regarding references to climate change, it was in the news last week the best way to reduce climate change is for humans to stop procreating. Google it.
Now that Lee has a PhD perhaps he can enroll in comedy school. Fringers: get thee to “Hot Thespians” and “Outside Joke” for natural comedic talent.
