Along with all the other Winnipeggers wanting to bid a fond farewell this week to a city lunch institution, I made a trip to The Wagon Wheel Lunch today to enjoy one of its famous, mouthwatering Club House sandwiches. One cannot go to the Wagon Wheel without having a Club House – at least once. You do usually end up having it twice, especially if you order the platter, as it’s impossible to finish the entire plate of food in one sitting! Our group decided to go a bit early, knowing the joint would be busy – we never anticipated such a line-up out the door before 11:30 am – and it only grew longer the entire 1 1/2 hours we were there.
Granted things were running a bit slower with such crowds but it was well worth the wait! The sandwich was a stack of delicous – from the crisp bacon and fresh tomatoes to the tender, freshly roasted turkey! The Club House isn’t just a sandwich – it must have been what the Earl of Sandwich was dreaming of when he threw the first stack of ingredients between two pieces of bread! Piled high with those essentials, there’s also lettuce, mayo and pickles on your choice of bread, toasted or not. Add a side of coleslaw and fries, and you won’t need to eat until tomorrow – and then you can have your leftovers for Wednesday’s lunch.
Get one while you still can – The Wagon Wheel Lunch in the Norlyn Building (305 Hargrave St, just north of Portage Ave) will serve its last Club House sandwich this Friday, July 13th.
