My iPhone just died. But that’s okay because it was ancient (4 years old!) and was due for an update anyway.
Before buying a tech gadget I like to do my research. I don’t consider myself a tech geek but I’m not a Luddite either. With the rise of Android phones, I started to wonder whether I should switch from Apple’s iOS to Google’s dominant platform. There is no shortage of opinion in the tech blog universe as to which is better.
If you want an unbiased opinion on the available operating systems out there, good luck finding it. I thought maybe the comments section would give me a better idea as it is used by people who actually use their devices everyday. No such luck. The comments section of every single blog I searched was dominated by fanboys. You know, the ones who live and die for their gadget but have no real sense of how the average user actually uses their smartphone.
Flame wars would ensue but the level of insults were shocking to me. It was like the phone you chose was somehow a reflection of your character. Apple users were rich, superficial and dumb, whereas Android users were antisocial basement dwellers who want everything for free. The tech blogs would actually encourage them by writing articles like this just to get the page hits. Every article and blog post pitted Android v. Apple as the epic battle between good versus evil. David and Goliath. Except who was David and who was Goliath depended on what side you were on.
In the end, I had to abandon the tech blogosphere and rely on statistics, services available and what I want from a smartphone to make my decision. Something I probably should have done in the first place. But hey at least we can still have a good laugh at the end of the day.
