This weekend thousands will flock to Maple Grove Park to take part in Winnipeg’s biggest volleyball event, MTS Super Spike. This is the 11th year the event is taking place and this year’s tournament is the largest yet, with 342 teamsregistered to compete. This is a far cry from the events inception at The Forks, where only 30 teams could compete. The event has grown so large in fact, that Maple Grove could no longer handle all the cars, so parking this year will be at the University of Manitoba’s U Lot, for the first time.
With 32 courts (including 6 beach courts) at Maple Grove Park, those attending come from all levels of volleyball experience and compete in one of three divisions: Recreational, Intermediate or Competitive. However, not all in attendance are there for the volleyball…
Super Spike also features a great line up of bands including Moses Mayes headlining Friday and Big Wreck headlining Saturday. Other bands playing during the weekend include The Dust Rhinos, Take me to the Pilot, and The Mad Young Darlings. Once all the games are said and done with and a winner is declared, the weekend wraps with the Red Bull Beach Party featuring DJ Dow Jones.
Proceeds from Super Spike all go towards supporting Team Canada Women’s Volleyball Centre (TCWVC) and has grown into TCWVC’s largest annual fundraiser. The event is completely run by volunteers, led by an organizing committee that has been hard at work for the past year getting everything together.
