Canada Games organizers are holding a volunteer recruitment fair this Sat. Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Centre Court of St Vital Mall.
Six thousand volunteers are needed so Winnipeg can put on the best Canada Summer Games ever.
Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of the first Canada Games held in Quebec City in 1967. To commemorate the occasion, a large cake will be served at 11 a.m. and Brian Mayes, councillor for St Vital, Rochelle Squires, Manitoba Minister for Sport, and of course Niibin (the mascot) will be there.
You’ll also be able to leave special messages for the athletes and have your picture taken at the photo booth.
It’s only February and you may not be thinking ahead to summer yet, but it’s going to be “the hottest summer in half a century” and this event will get you excited about the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games being held in our city!
If you’ve been thinking about volunteering, why not come down and learn about the many varied positions open. Not only will you be “giving your time so the athletes can shine” as the motto for the Games goes, but there are some fascinating behind the scenes opportunities.
You could be working in Community Relations as an animator for the mascot. If you’ve ever wondered how hot it gets in those mascot costumes, this would be one way to find out.
If you enjoy driving and you’re a good driver why not look at a transportation position. They need motor pool drivers during the Games to transport accredited participants to and from Canada Games locations and functions using official vehicles.
And they will need dispatchers as well, to schedule and dispatch these 60 motor pool vehicles that will be used by all accredited Games clients.
Even though it’s Winnipeg, volunteers in the security detail will be checking the credentials of all Games participants at entry points to the villages. Security volunteers are in high demand right now and it is a really friendly position where you can chat as you check accreditations.
The Forks Festival also needs volunteers. This will be the cultural hotspot of the Festival and it’s rumoured there will be some amazing concerts there during the Games as it’s not only the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games but Canada’s 150th.
These are just a few of the many available opportunities. Whatever your skill or hobby, there is probably a matching volunteer job.
Come July 28, 6000 volunteers will be having so much fun while volunteering, the Games will pass in a happy blur of completed shifts, new friends made and memories that will last forever.
So, why not check out all the details this Saturday at St. Vital Mall and sign up for your chance to volunteer at this summer’s Canada Games in Winnipeg.
