Looking for something unique to do this summer in Winnipeg? Here are some feel good suggestions as discovered by CNC’s roving reporter, Gracie Sweetstory:
There are gardens and then there are gardens. For something completely different try these:
Cool Dunes, James Avenue Pumping Station, Waterfront Drive
Citizen Garden, West end of the Esplanade Riel
Cure De Ville, La Maison des Artistes, Provencher Blvd
Every day during the 2016 edition of Cool Gardens, a blanket designed by Micah Lexier, Winnipeg-born, Toronto-based artist, collector and curator, will be given away free. Lexier was honoured with the 2015 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts.
The images on the custom-woven, cotton tapestry represent elementary school readers, seating plans, and board games. Recipients can show how they are using their new blankets at #ABlanketADay.
Keep an eye out for a member of the Cool Gardens organization who will be in Winnipeg each day of Cool Gardens to select a recipient of a blanket of the day.
Other great gardens include:
2°, Le Jardin de Sculptures at La Maison des Artistes, Provencher Blvd
Big Red, East of Canadian Museum of Human Rights
Le Rendez-Vouz, South Point lands at The Forks
Cool Dots, Inn at the Forks
Make it a garden scavenger hunt to see where this is:
Free concerts by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, every Tuesday until Aug. 16 at the Millennium Centre, 389 Main Street.
For those who like walking, history and free tours, Dalnavert Museum offers tours with fascinating commentary every Sat. until Sept. at noon and 2 p.m. Departures are from 61 Cartlton St.
For those who like to walk with adorable little dogs here is something to consider:
For a win-win how about this, give yourself a treat and help sick kids at the same time:
There is something you can do for those in hospital during the summer if you are away (or not).
You can send Well Wishes to folks you know in hospital. (This program is for adult patients 18 and over). It is a free service provided by hospital Volunteer Services who deliver the messages daily.
It’s easy; just go on-line and enter the name of the Winnipeg hospital where the patient is. Click on the Well Wishes Program. Fill out the form adding your personal message.
You can send a new message of encouragement and comfort every day if you wish. It’s that easy to make someone’s day; yours too.
And finally, to further treat yourself, take a book/leave a book at any one of the 100 Little Free Libraries in Winnipeg.

Happy Summer!
