For eleven years, the 7th Generation Walk for Mother Earth has been taking place in Winnipeg. The aim is to speak up for aboriginal rights and the natural world.
Following speeches by Susanne McCrea, Wendy Ross, Chantelle Kejick, Dennis Le Neveu and Michael Kannon at St. John’s Park, we walked south on Main Street to The Forks, ending at the Oodena Celebration Circle, where we enjoyed some refreshments (courtesy of Food Not Bombs), dancing (to the music of the Keewatin Otchitchak Traditional Women’s Drum Group) and a Water Ceremony. Along the way, the marchers and the people we encountered were entertained by Winnipeg’s unforgettable Flaming Trolleys Marching Band.
The walk was sponsored by Boreal Forest Network, Council of Canadians (Winnipeg), Winnipeg Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Movement, Kanikanichihk and Native Studies at the University of Manitoba
