Community gardens are becoming more popular as residents of many neighbourhoods embrace the opportunity to grow and harvest their own food.
One area of Winnipeg that is home to a variety of community gardens is the West Broadway neighbourhood.
This growing effort has been spearheaded by West Broadway Community Gardens, run by West Broadway Community Organization.
Many residents of this high density area live in apartments, and available space for gardening is limited. It’s why West Broadway Community Gardens has a waiting list for garden plots.
From individual plots to community u-pick gardens, from garden programming for rooming house residents to a tall grass restoration project, West Broadway is quickly becoming one of the most garden friendly areas in the city, with over 80 community plots around the neighbourhood.
Zorya Aero is the Community Gardens Coordinator for West Broadway Community Gardens. Recently, she joined Susan Huebert of CKUW 95.9 FM show People of Interest, to discuss the truly amazing growth of gardening in the West Broadway neighbourhood.
