Over the course of the school year, the Youth in Philanthropy group at Garden City Collegiate (GCC) decided to focus their attention on helping youth in Winnipeg.
The community in and around GCC recently experienced significant challenges particularly on the topic of mental illness. As a result, the Collegiate’s YiP group wanted to help other youth in Winnipeg avoid these same challenges.
In order to raise funds during the year, the members organized bake sales. Proceeds from these bake sales were used towards purchasing toys for Toy Mountain, which would then be given to children less fortunate during the holiday season. GCC’s YiP participants also solicited donations of toys from students and staff members of Garden City Collegiate.
The committee also decided to pursue a YiP in Action Grant and chose to use those funds to complete the Brown Paper Bag Project. This involved creating care packages for Winnipeg’s disadvantaged and distributing those at a local shelter.
Despite having a smaller group, the students showed great enthusiasm and passion when discussing their ideas and how they could put these ideas into action. The group learned a lot this year and GCC’s YiPpers are excited to continue expanding their connection with the community in the coming years.
