People on Toronto Street between Notre Dame Ave. and Wellington Ave. in the West End were surprised to see a slow moving car being pursued by a police car around 11:15pm last night.
One of the witnesses I talked to heard the sirens and looked out of his third floor window to see a car driving north being followed by police. He watched the cars proceed down the back lane between Victor and Toronto streets, circle the block, and then was shocked to see the man in the moving vehicle jump out of the car and run. The vehicle almost ran over the fleeing suspect after which it rolled up the curb and smashed into a tree. The car was not damaged.
Another witness was relieved to see the car roll up the curb and not into his parked van right across the street.
It turned out it was a stolen car. A cell phone was found in the car. Police did not want to comment on the ongoing investigation.
At 11:45 pm, police were still searching the area for the suspect and the K-9 unit was in the area. Police cars were on every corner within about a 6 block radius. By 12:15 am, it seemed like police had called off the search.
