The Mauro Family’s philanthropy is focused on making a long term difference, not just in Winnipeg but in communities throughout Canada.
In giving, their aim is to reach those in most need and to foster social justice.
At this year’s Manitoba Philanthropy Awards Luncheon, The Winnipeg Foundation nominated the Mauro Family for the award of ‘Outstanding Philanthropist’.
One facet of the Mauro Family’s charitable giving is through their donor advised fund, held at The Winnipeg Foundation. Annually their community investments exceed $250,000.
Their partnership with The Winnipeg Foundation ensures their impact will be felt in perpetuity.
Through The Winnipeg Foundation and The Mauro Family Foundation, the Mauros have supported hundreds of projects and programs through organizations close to their hearts, reflecting the scope and scale of the complexity of our community’s needs.
Beneficiaries have included those challenged intellectually (L’Arche), developmentally (OHEYS), economically (Agape Table for Kids) and those new to our community (SMD-Deaf Newcomers Programs).
There has also been strong support for access to and inclusion in the arts through support for the Gimli Film Festival, Inner City Music Programs and Gwaandak Theatre, to name just a few.
Most significantly, the Mauros are committed to engaging people in deep and open exploration of many diverse issues that affect world peace. The creation of the Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice at the University of Manitoba enables programming on cultural, religious and philosophical dimensions of peace. The centre is home to the University of Manitoba’s Graduate Programs in Peace and Conflict Studies.
In Arthur Mauro’s words:
“It is my dream that the Centre for Peace and Justice be a model that others will follow. That the teachings of respect for diversity and of rational discourse and human interaction that exists at the University would be sustained. That the intellectual tradition of the Jesuits to infuse knowledge with the pursuit of social justice would prevail at St. Paul’s College. And that in years to come we can with pride claim some small contribution to creating a better world.”
The Mauros are quiet philanthropic leaders, granting to causes they care about and trusting others to use resources well in tackling community challenges. In many cases, the Mauros have been lead primary funders which a charity can then use to leverage and build other relationships.
Compassion and generosity are hallmarks of Winnipeg. We owe this reputation to quiet leaders like the Mauro Family who lead by example.
