What do Premier Greg Selinger, Mayor Brian Bowman and NHL star Jonathan Toews have in common? All are high profile Winnipeggers and all are supporters of the Nourishing Potential Fund.
Last week, The Winnipeg Foundation announced a new, 10-week campaign to build the Fund that supports nutrition programs for kids at local charitable organizations. Toews, who credits his success on and off the ice to healthy eating, is the campaign’s ambassador this summer.
Together, Winnipeggers from all walks of life are building the Nourishing Potential Fund with a goal of a $5 million endowment. Lead sponsors include the Province of Manitoba, City of Winnipeg, Assiniboine Credit Union, Wawanesa and the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation.
For the Province of Manitoba, supporting the Fund makes good sense, says Premier Selinger, who has also made a personal contribution to the fund.
“Our job as a provincial government is to ensure that Manitobans can reach their full potential, which is why we even love the name: Nourishing Potential,” he says.
“So, supporting a fund like this, which gets contributions from so many other Manitobans, and Winnipeggers in particular, means that we’re going to be out there supporting people to get the nutrition they need, they healthy food they need, and the education they need, to have a healthy lifestyle. And we’re all better off as a result of that,” says Selinger.
Mayor Bowman, also a donor to the fund in his own right, agrees that investing in Nourishing Potential is important for our entire community and its future.
“Supporting access to nutrition, school snack programs and cooking education really sets up our community for success,” says Bowman.
“Our population is growing towards a million people and it’s important we empower and support our children, and our youth, to make healthy choices so they can lead our growing, thriving city into a more prosperous future.”
