Question … When will Ottawa change the name of its hockey team? Now that his life has been saved by a liver transplant, can Eugene Melnyk really want them to be known as The Senators?
The team name goes back more than a hundred years, but now it has come to represent just about everything that is wrong with the government of this country.
We have the pride of Prince Edward Island, Mike Duffy, facing more than 30 criminal charges. If the prosecution ever gets through with him, they may move on to Pamela Wallin, the Queen of Wadena.
It has been more than two years since Stephen Harper appointed anyone to the Red Chamber, and 20 of the 105 seats are now vacant. The Fathers of Confederation wanted the upper chamber to be the home of sober second thought, even though several of them, including Sir John A, were seldom sober.
Since the Mounties and auditors have been sticking their noses into every nook and cranny, the place may never be the same. Rumour has it at least ten more Senators may face charges related to questionable expenses. So far more than $21 million has been spent investigating and prosecuting Duffy and Wallin and the other alleged crooks. That’s considerably more than what they may have gotten improperly from the public treasury.
If it continues, it may well become The Never-Ending Story. As he watches from his comfy digs in Barbados, Mr. Melnyk might be trying out some new names for his team.
How about the Ottawa Budget Officers?
Hmmm .. we’ll keep working on it.
