Rotary Peace Days is organizing their 7th Peace Days Festival. This is one initiative amongst many of the Rotary World Peace Partners District 5550.
The goal of Peace Days is to bring community members together to celebrate, discuss and protect peace within our city and beyond by encouraging organizations and citizens to host events that support peace and compassion.
Last year, the Festival received support from various organizations, such as churches, businesses, non governmental organizations, Indigenous groups, universities and numerous schools that represented private/public, elementary/middle/senior levels, and numerous school divisions.
One of the signature events during Peace Days is the Rotary Elementary Peace Walk with a theme of ‘Seeds of Hope’. This will be the 3rd such walk and will be held on Sept. 16, 2016 from 10 – 1 p.m. at the theatre located near the Canadian Museum for Human Rights at the Forks.
The grand marshall will be Winnipeg Police Staff Sergeant Johnasson. Also being welcomed are a number of newcomers from NEEDS (Newcomers Employment Education Development Services) from Winnipeg, who have been invited to walk with the group. The children in the march will be giving the new Canadians their little messages of hope and peace.
The Peace Walk will also have guests speakers representing the Indigenous, Jewish and Muslim communities.
The event will be held in both official languages and Jake Chenier, a performer and musician, will be providing entertainment during the walk and while the children eat their lunch.
Staff of the CMHR have also been invited to participate, providing an opportunity to sing them happy birthday.
