In the world there are more than seven billion people spread across 196 countries living their own version of reality. In light of this fact, the notion of “making a difference” or “changing the world” can seem rather daunting, if not unrealistic.
However, if we can see ourselves as all very unique cogs within this giant machinery of our planet, it becomes clear that changing the world starts with ourselves and our own communities. And if we can see the Big Picture as something that we are all a part of rather than a separate, ominous entity, perhaps making a difference wouldn’t seem so daunting anymore.
Meliorist, a video project, is intended to be the voice of people who want to make a difference in the world. It may seem a grandiose claim, conjuring up scenes of large philanthropic gestures; $5 million donations and thousands of toys donated. These are very legitimate, of course, but they give the impression of the unattainable.
In contrast, this video project aims to show the very attainable; the different ways in which people can initiate positive change in their own community. Through a series of short videos, different groups, programs and initiatives will be featured along with the opinions, ideas and aspirations of the individuals behind them.
Any good intention is welcome and all dreams are relevant.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, meliorism is the idea or belief the world tends to improve and that humans can aid in its betterment. This video project hopes to support this idea – as wonderfully optimistic as it may be – reinforcing an unwavering belief in possibilities.
