Talking about the ways in which she gives is difficult for Shahina Siddiqui. As the president and executive director of Islamic Social Services and a Muslim, it goes against her faith.
“In my culture and tradition we don’t talk about giving. It’s basically done so that your right hand does not know what your left hand gets.”
But she also believes giving is one of the most important duties a person has.
“Giving to me is literally a responsibility. It’s not a favour or a burden. It’s something that to me is very natural to being human.”
Siddiqui’s story is one of several featured on River City 360, a new audio segment featuring stories about people working to make Winnipeg the best it can be. River City 360 airs on CJNU 93.7 FM and Community News Commons.
This month, River City 360 is taking a closer look at giving by asking Winnipeggers from all walks of life what giving means to them.
River City 360 is brought to you by Community News Commons, a project of The Winnipeg Foundation.
