Mention The Breakfast Club and what comes to mind for most people is the 1985 American coming of age comedy-drama film featuring five high school students who meet for detention, pour their hearts out to each other, and discover how they have a lot more in common than they thought.
Fast forward to present day and you will find a different breakfast club that meets each Friday in Winnipeg Beach. This group of “club members” may be as diverse as the high school students but detention isn’t what brings them together.
Almost five years ago, two people, Holly and Sherry, got together and had breakfast. Soon they invited some of their friends to come too, and before long those friends invited their friends to attend also.
The group gradually grew into what it is today — nearly 20 people who gather to share the most important meal of the day. For the past year, they have met at Bonnie’s Restaurant in Winnipeg Beach, however prior to that, in many other restaurants throughout the region.
Although the food and coffee are a vital part of the draw, what really brings this group together is the power of networking and support. These are healers, therapists, artists, business owners, community activists, caregivers and generally wonderful people to hang out with.
During the consumption of food and beverages there is laughter, encouragement, congratulations, event announcements, support and the sharing of ideas. The hour flies by and everyone parts amidst hugs and best wishes until the next Friday.
The members of this “breakfast club” definitely have a great deal in common. All of them appreciate good food, fresh coffee, great company and the chance to share their lives with each other.
Earlier this year they also began sharing the cost of lottery tickets and when the big win comes in, breakfast could be someplace warm and tropical.
