“If you’re giving and giving and giving, and your cup isn’t full, it’s difficult to continue giving.”
Dr. Ryan Greschuk’s poignant words at Comforts of Home – Care’s Celebrating Family Caregivers! To Your Health event set the stage for more than 150 caregivers in the audience on Mon. Apr. 4 in Winnipeg.
Family caregivers make up one-third of Manitobans, according to Statistics Canada – higher than the national average of 28%.
Monday evening’s lively event, at the Viscount Gort Hotel, was an opportunity for some of Winnipeg’s dedicated and hardworking family caregivers to take a break, be inspired and share a laugh.
Attendees were captivated by the amazing stories and entertainment as presented by award-winning speaker and radio host Stephanie Staples, Comforts of Home – Care President & CEO Katherine Peters, Comforts of Home – Care caregiver Terry Kent, bestselling author and wellness chiropractor Dr. Ryan Greschuk, Amazing Race Canada winner and Parkinson’s activist Tim Hague Sr., local singer-songwriter Ila Barker, and author and certified Laughter Yoga Instructor Rolande Kirouac.
In addition to being a free evening off for family caregivers to share laughter, hugs and stories, the event was also in support of Parkinson Canada. The event raised more than $1,100 toward Parkinson research and caregiver support.
ComfortsofHomeCare.ca notes that caregiver spouses have a 23% increased risk of stroke compared to non-caregiving spouses. As our aging population swells and more Manitobans take on the role of caregiver within their family, the issue of wellness becomes an increasingly serious concern in our province.
The Celebrating Family Caregivers event coincides with Caregiver Recognition Day – Tue. Apr. 5. Manitoba is the only province in Canada with a legislated day to recognize family caregivers.
As we as a society recognize, celebrate, and honor the important and incredible work caregivers provide in our province, we’ll contribute to a happier, healthier, and stronger local community.
Early in the evening, Comforts of Home – Care President & CEO Katherine Peters asked the room, “What are you doing to equip yourself?” What, indeed.
This Caregiver Recognition Day, do something for yourself. Take care of yourself. You deserve it.
