South Sudanese refugee Rebecca Deng is one of several Winnipeg women who have come together to help those devastated by war in that African nation.
She recently founded a project called The Winnipeg Women’s Resource Centre in Bor. Bor is one of several cities in South Sudan where residents have been terrorized by ongoing conflict.
Together with many local allies in Winnipeg, Deng is raising money to create opportunities to help those caught up in the fighting.
Along with other ‘lost girls and boys’ of Sudan, Deng fled her home as a child, escaping to Ethiopia, moving to Kenya, then onto Uganda, and finally to Winnipeg in 2005.
Being a refugee for 23 years was a harrowing journey for Deng. But, as we hear in this excerpt from a recent RC360 show about her life and the work she is doing now, the tribulations of her past have only strengthened her resolve to make a difference and help heal the world:
